Headteacher October News
Dear Parents and Carers
I am so pleased to let you know that the children are adapting well, gaining confidence, following directions, and developing skills and habits that will support year-long success.
Celebrating Black History Month Through the Humanities
With our school development plan's focus on the Humanities, Ms Clarke has done an outstanding job leading our Black History Month activities. This month, we highlighted influential figures who have made significant contributions to the arts, emphasising the impact of creativity on our lives. I especially enjoyed reviewing the children’s home learning projects, where they shared their knowledge of diverse artists, musicians, and poets. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and understanding grow!
Teachers to the Rescue: Kittens Find New Homes Thanks to Staff's Quick Action
Earlier this month, Mrs Capone made an unexpected discovery on her way to work—a small pet carrier abandoned by the roadside, containing one cat and four tiny kittens. With her humanitarian spirit in full swing, she brought the feline family to school and dedicated her lunch break to finding them homes. While traditional adoption routes didn’t pan out, our dedicated staff stepped in to help. Ms Bradshaw and Mrs Moss each adopted three of the kittens, giving them a safe and loving home, and Ms Griffin found a wonderful home for the mother and fourth kitten who are thriving. Now, during our staff business meetings, we enjoy heartwarming kitten updates as a bonus!
A Memorable PGL Adventure with Year 6
Last week, I had the pleasure of joining the Year 6 children for the first two days of PGL—marking my 24th year of attending! It was wonderful to see the children tackle so many responsibilities, from setting up their bedrooms and coordinating shower schedules to supporting each other through the challenges of group living. Their teamwork truly shone as they faced a variety of demanding outdoor activities together. A huge thank you goes to the dedicated team that guided them, with a special mention to Ms Gillingham, who skilfully led and supported the group throughout the week.
School Lunch Provision
We have had several discussions regarding our school lunch provision, and I would like to share some of the decisions we've made. Our focus is to help children learn about creating a balanced plate and make informed food choices.
We are pleased to announce that a few parents have been approached to participate in future menu decisions with Mrs Moss and Olive Dining.
- Hot puddings - these will be reduced to twice a week
- Use of Food as a Reward - we have replaced squash and biscuits with a fruit platter for the top table. As part of revising our behaviour policy, we are shifting the focus from extrinsic rewards to fostering more intrinsic motivation in children.
- Parent Survey and Catering Contract - we will survey the parents for their feedback ahead of the contract review.
- Healthy Living Coffee Morning - In conjunction with the School Nurse and Olive Dining, we will help parents better understand government guidance and how Olive will be incorporating these principles.
- Whole-School Focus on Healthy Eating - we are dedicated to helping children make healthy choices and understand how to build a balanced plate. To support this, our Design and Technology Coordinator will lead a whole-school project on informed food choices, along with a dedicated assembly. Additionally, we will organise a series of sessions focused on nutritional education within their DT sessions.
Pick-Up and Drop-Off: Playground Expectations
Please remember that parents are responsible for their children until 8:50 am, unless the child is travelling independently or attending a club. At the end of the school day, responsibility returns to parents once children are handed back.
Be cautious of children on scooters, as there are many young children and vulnerable adults in the area.
We also ask that dogs are not brought into the playground; if you do bring them, please keep them on a lead and securely held. These guidelines help ensure our community space remains safe and comfortable for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation.
Wishing you all a restful half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming back the children after the school INSET day on Tuesday, 5th November.
