Exciting Updates on Our OPAL Journey

We are thrilled to share the progress we've made in our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) journey!

We are thrilled to share the progress we've made in our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) journey! Outdoor play is a cornerstone of our school's commitment to fostering creativity, teamwork and joy in our students. Here's a glimpse of how things are evolving:

New Equipment Brings Joy

Recently, we've introduced some simple yet effective new play resources for the children - crates and chalk! These items have sparked incredible creativity and fun across all year groups. From constructing imaginative structures to creating beautiful chalk art, the children have embraced these additions with enthusiasm.

We are always on the lookout for more resources to support this exciting journey. If you're able, donations of items such as chalk, washing-up liquid (for bubbles and water play) or additional crates would be greatly appreciated. Every contribution makes a difference!

'Freedom Days' and Community Spirit

Our 'Freedom Days' have been a wonderful opportunity for children in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 to come together, share equipment, and play harmoniously. It's been heartwarming to witness the friendships and collaboration blossoming across-year groups.

Play Assemblies: Learning Through Engagement

As part of our commitment to safe and enjoyable play, all children take part in regular ‘play’ assemblies. These assemblies are an essential part of our OPAL journey, where we:

  • Introduce New Equipment: children are shown how to use new resources creatively and safely.
  • Discuss Health and Safety: guidance is provided on safe risks children can take with the equipment.
  • Encourage Feedback: children can ask questions about new guidelines, share their thoughts on playtime, and offer suggestions.

These assemblies not only educate children but also empower them to take an active role in shaping their play experiences.

Enhancements to Lunchtime Supervision

We've also made changes to how our lunchtime staff support the children. Rather than being assigned to specific year groups (except on Mondays and Fridays between 1:30 and 1:55), staff are now assigned to specific areas such as:

  • First Aider: dedicated to ensuring prompt care when needed.
  • Climbing Frame Monitors: encouraging safe and adventurous play.
  • Hall Supervisors: helping children make balanced food choices.
  • Roaming Staff: promoting safety, positive behaviour and encouraging diverse play opportunities.

To further support this, our lunchtime supervisors receive weekly training from our Play Coordinator, Coach DaSilva. These sessions cover:

  • How to use new equipment effectively.
  • Identifying and managing health and safety risks.
  • Encouraging safe play and "safe" risk-taking.
  • Strategies to facilitate and engage children in meaningful play.

This ongoing training has been instrumental in creating a safer, more engaging and higher-quality play environment for all children.

Preparing for All Weather

As we move closer to fully embracing the OPAL ethos, it's vital for children to be appropriately dressed for all weather conditions. Whether it's rain or shine, please ensure your child comes to school with a waterproof jacket. England's weather can be unpredictable, and we want our children to enjoy the outdoors comfortably and safely.

We are incredibly proud of how our OPAL journey is unfolding and can't wait to see what the future holds. Thank you for your continued support as we nurture a love of outdoor play and learning in our school community.
