Year 4 had a fabulous introduction into the topic of ‘Sound’ through a carousel of practical exploration. Through the workshop and such a short amount of time the children began to identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating. They also began to recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear.
The children tried to find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it and between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it.
The practical activities included creating a beaker xylophone, using banging tuning forks and seeing the vibrations in water, and swinging whirring tubes to see how the sound could be altered.
The children also experimented with different materials to test which amplified sound and which helped to soundproof. A particular highlight was seeing couscous dancing to Lady Gaga!
